Otrium is a high-end online fashion outlet that puts the customer experience first. Named one of Fast Company magazine’s Most Innovative Companies of 2023, Otrium designed its membership-based platform to deliver exceptional value to both brands and consumers: fashion lovers get access to their favorite labels at an attractive discount, while brands gain a valuable new revenue stream and avoid inventory build-up.

The concept has proven to be a huge success. Launched in 2017, Otrium now has more than five million members, over 300 brand partners, and operations across Europe and the United States. But throughout its rapid expansion, the Amsterdam-based company has never lost sight of its mission to reduce fashion waste. Together, we developed and implemented a circular initiative to drive further sustainability improvements.

“Preventing waste is an important part of Otrium’s DNA, and thanks to our partnership with Bleckmann and their Renewal Workshop team, we can now repair the majority of damaged returns and put them back into circulation. We are happy that we can use our position in the fashion supply chain to create lasting change and accelerate towards our mission of reducing the volume of garments that go to landfill.”

To support Otrium’s sustainability ambitions, The Renewal Workshop team developed a streamlined and scalable process for high-end items to deliver like-new repairs at the speed of e-commerce. At our facility in Almelo, the Netherlands, renewal experts used low-impact cleaning processes and industrial sewing machines to quickly restore a wide range of damaged items to like-new condition – including bags, shoes, and coats. More than 1,000 items were refurbished using this process during the initial pilot phase.

Our integrated data capabilities were also critical to the success of the project, helping to demonstrate the commercial viability of this sustainability initiative. Thanks to our advanced inventory tracking systems, we found that 70% of the renewed Otrium stock had been sold within seven weeks. In addition, carbon tracking software Vaayu calculated that, on average, a refurbished return sold on Otrium avoids 2.760kg of carbon emissions and 69g of waste. Based on these impressive results, Otrium decided to scale up beyond the pilot phase. We now repair tens of thousands of damaged returns per year.

Overstocking remains a persistent problem in the fashion industry, and Otrium’s unique online platform is dedicated to giving end-of-season clothing a second life. However, the company wanted to uncover even more opportunities to reduce fashion waste. Their solution was to focus on repairing damaged returns – helping to ensure that even more garments can be worn. Otrium was looking for circular fashion experts to develop a repair solution tailored to this purpose.
